3 Ways to Enjoy the Holidays Without Tipping the Scale
3 Ways to Enjoy the Holidays Without Tipping the Scale
The holidays are a food frenzy! Here are a few tips to help you combat the onslaught of unhealthy foods that are as a part of the holidays as gift wrap.
Balance
You deserve to enjoy every delicious holiday delicacy that comes your way this season. However, there are ways to enjoy these delicacies without the guilt. One way to do this is by controlling your portions. Opt for a small plate at the potluck or eat a large salad before taking off to a holiday party. This way, you can still indulge without guilt or an upset stomach.
Exercise
For many, the holidays mean a little more time off work than usual. Take this opportunity for a mid-morning jog or even hit the gym to even out your holiday food indulging. This will allow you to effectively burn off the excess calories. Not to mention, getting into a habit of exercise before the start of a new year can?t hurt either.
Review
Skim over your grandma?s famous cookie recipes and try to discover creative alternatives to ingredients high in calories or saturated fat. For example, plant-based butters are healthier and even comparative in taste to conventional butter. Coconut milk whip cream is a definite contender to its dairy counterpart.
Navigating New Years Resolutions
Navigating New Years Resolutions
It?s never too early to plan for success, especially when it comes to planning for New Years Resolutions.
Resolutions are oftentimes goals that we should be working toward year-round; whether it be a better diet, more exercise, or less sugar intake. So how can we successfully make positive resolutions a part of our daily lives? Here are three suggestions.
Make a dedicated resolution calendar
A good way to implement and track your New Years resolutions is by dedicating a calendar or planner to your goals. You can find affordable calendars at your local dollar store or Target. If you opt for a calendar, hang it in a high traffic area of your house and keep track of your daily progress.
Break it down
Be sure to break down your goals into achievable segments. It?s safe to say that the more vague a goal is, the less likely it?ll be reached. Rather than proclaiming that you will read more in the year 2016, read one book every two weeks. Instead of saying you want to exercise more, make Tuesday and Thursday your jogging days. If you want to pay off more debt, set aside a specified amount every month that will allow you to reach your goal by the end of the year. Remember, success takes planning.
Find an accountability partner
It?s always easier to tackle a challenge with someone by your side. Get a friend or family member involved in your resolution and celebrate successful implementation with them as the months pass. For example, you could read a book every month with a partner, then treat yourselves to a literary conversation over scones and coffee. Sign up for a half marathon with a co-worker and hold each other accountable until the day of the race.
It?s never too late to implement goals and make yourself the best you can be. Be sure attend some of our monthly workshops at DeMoss Chiropractic, your ally in healthful and happy living.
Health Benefits of Avocados!
Avocados have a unique nutrient profile – where most fruit predominantly contain carbs, avocados are high in healthy fats. Avocados are a staple in any Californian?s diet and today we are going to dive into the benefits of this delicious fruit! And yes, it?s a fruit.
Nutritious – There are many varieties of avocados. The most popular is the Hass avocado, which is available throughout the year. Twenty vitamins and minerals are packed into a single avocado, including 26% of the RDA for Vitamin K, 20% for Folate, and 17% for Vitamin C. That?s just in one avocado! Although it contains 9 grams of carbs, 7 of those are fiber so there are only 2 ?net? carbs, making it a low-carb friendly plant food. They also contain no cholesterol or sodium.
More Potassium than bananas! Potassium is a critical nutrient that many people are not getting enough of. Potassium helps maintain electrical gradients in the body?s cells and serves various important functions. The average avocado contains 14% of the RDA (recommended daily amount) for Potassium while a banana only contains 10% even though they are often considered the holy grail of high potassium foods.
Heart Healthy – Avocados are filled with heart-healthy monounsaturated fatty acids. The majority of the fat in avocado is oleic acid. This is a monounsaturated fatty acid that is also the major component in olive oil – which is believed to be the reason for its beneficial effects. Oleic acid has been linked to reduced inflammation and been shown to have effects on the genes linked to cancer.
What more could you ask for in a food? Keep up with the workshops we host throughout the month to learn more about nutrition and healthy eating!
4 Reasons to be Thankful for Chiropractic Care
4 Reasons to be Thankful for Chiropractic Care
1. It?s Natural
Chiropractic is a natural and effective form of healthcare, which promotes proper functioning of the central nervous system. Many of our patients have eliminated the need for dangerous surgery and expensive medication after receiving regular adjustments. Everyone is treated as an individual under our chiropractic care, meaning the aches and pains specific to your body are recognized and corrected.
2. It lets the body heal itself
When a patient comes in for an adjustment they experience precise forces to specific parts of their spinal segment, which ultimately correct misalignments and allow normal nerve transmissions to the rest of the body. When nerve transmissions are sending clear messages, your body can recuperate itself. Chiropractors tackle the root of your pain, which is often just nerve transmissions being blocked (these are called ?subluxations?). Rather than simply treating symptoms, chiropractic care assists your body in resisting disease and regaining its potential.
3. Relief
We are confident that there is no limit to the benefits regular chiropractic care can provide. The most common relief associated with chiropractic care is back pain. However, no matter the pain or discomfort people come in experiencing, our chiropractors seek to correct underlying causes rather than masking or numbing your pain with medications.
4. It?s great for the whole family
Chiropractic care is not only for adults; our chiropractors are specifically trained to check a child?s spine for areas causing nerve damage. If any indication of trauma or damage is present, a gentle adjustment is administered with the same pressure you would use to test the ripeness of a tomato. From infants to grandparents, our families report having more energy, less dependency on medication, and improved overall health as a result of regular chiropractic care.
