Childhood Concussions: The Basics

According to the Mayo clinic, “a concussion is a traumatic brain injury that alters the way your brain functions. Effects are usually temporary but can include headaches and problems with concentration, memory, balance, and coordination.”

Any blow to the head or upper body can result in a concussion including but not limited to: physical altercations or fights, playground injuries, car accidents, bicycle accidents, falling down the stairs, or other falls.

When considering sports for your child to participate in, remember that not all sports include physical contact, but all sports do have the potential to result in a concussion. It’s important to know the signs and potential damage.

It’s important to know the signs of a concussion. It’s common for a blow to the head to result in a concussion, while not always causing a loss of consciousness. Many will claim to feel “fine” not being aware that they are dealing with a concussion so it’s important to know the typical signs:
– Loss of consciousness
– Memory problems
– Severe Headache
– Blurred vision
– Trouble walking
– Confusion and saying things that don’t make sense
– Slurred speech
– Drowsiness or feeling sluggish
– Unresponsiveness
– Sensitivity to light or sound.

These symptoms are a sign of a possible concussion and anyone displaying any of the above symptoms after a blow to the head or upper body should be taken immediately for examination by DeMoss Chiropractic or other healthcare professional.

We’re trained in how to gently and properly adjust a child’s spine. While a blow to the head or neck may not actually cause a concussion, it very well may have created a slight misalignment to the vertebra in the spine resulting a vertebral subluxation (nerve interference that can interrupt the signal from the brain that goes down the spinal cord and out to the muscles, organs and glads.)


Sitting is the New Smoking: A Standing Desk Review

Studies show that our constant habit of sitting during long hours at works aren’t the way our bodies are made to function. Our ancient ancestors were always on the move! There are apps available to remind constant sitters to take a five minute walking break, but there is a blossoming trend which is a fantastic alternative to prolonged sitting – standing desks.

Standing desks aren’t new, many notable minds have used standing desks for centuries – including Leonardo Da Vinci, Benjamin Franklin, Winston Churchill, and Ernst Hemingway.

Standing desks are correlated with raised productivity, weight loss, the ease of back pain, and increased energy. Though standing desks can be more costly than a standard desk, buying one for an office space or home can be a great investment in your health.4Z9A6360

Flexispot was kind enough to send us a standing desk to review for this blog post. What makes Felxispot unique is how their model can be placed atop a standard desk and adjusted based on the user’s height. Not to mention, the user has the option to shift the desk to a low setting, allowing a chair to be used as needed.

After two weeks, I’ve found the Flexispot to be a great addition to my office space. The size of the desk allows me to comfortably use my desktop screen and laptop simultaneously while having my planner sprawled for easy reference.

If I ever feel the need to sit, which is surprisingly less than I expected, I can simply adjust the desk to its lowest setting with ease. The hydraulics make the downward movement slow and quiet. As the only office staffer without a standing desk until now, I can see what I’ve been missing and encourage others to consider a standing desk for themselves and their employees.


Purify Your Home with Houseplants

From vehicle fumes to industrial pollutants, it’s clear that there are plenty of toxins outside of our homes. But that doesn’t mean toxins are absent from the house. Rubber Plant: The Rubber Plant is effective in removing formaldehyde from indoor air. It’s easy to grow or maintain, so if you don’t have a green thumb – this is a great solution for you! It can grow up to 8 feet tall in the correct environment.

Ferns: Ferns are a popular houseplant that is known for removing indoor air pollutants and adding humidity to indoor air.

Bamboo: Bamboo palms are effective at removing chemical contaminants from the air like formaldehyde and benzene. They also help to keep the air moist, which is especially helpful during winter months when heaters can produce overly dry indoor air.

Prop 64: Understanding the Basics!

California voted yes on Prop 64 in November. So, what does this mean? Well, Prop 64 legalized marijuana and hemp for recreational use, though it has been legal for medicinal use for several years. Some citizens who were against the passage of Prop 64 were vocal about their concerns regarding who could purchase it and how it is used in the public sphere. Prop 64 took this into consideration, making it illegal for those under 21 (similar to tabacco sales). Moreover, it can’t be smoked in public and users cannot drive while high or give it to minors. Commercial pot growers will be licensed and there will be regulations on labeling, packaging, and marketing the substance.

Californians who do not possess a medical marijuana card may not be abe to legally purchase pot from dispensaries until the second part of Prop 64 goes into effect on January 1st 2018.

Some things to look out for in the coming years. What will be Prop 64’s influence on the drug cartels — will it strengthen or weaken them? Will this Prop allow prime-time television ads for marijuana? If you object to this; consider what makes it different than beer advertisements? Just some things to keep in mind.

Chiropractic and The Brain

Thousands of people of all ages across the world were asked whether they would rather suffer from a back problem or a brain problem. Every single individual responded that they would choose to suffer from a back related issue. People tend to assume that even severe back problems present less of a health challenge than brain problems because the brain regulates so many aspects of life and health. People too often misunderstand that the truth of the circumstance unites the organs. The brain and spine combine to form the nervous system and the nervous system regulates the health of the body. Research shows that a back problem is a brain problem. Chiropractic care improves the brain and the health of the entire body through specific adjustments to the spine.

Four specific research articles done over the last decade prove that the largest benefit of a Chiropractic adjustment happens in the brain. An intimate relationship exists between the

spine, brain, and autonomic nervous system. The first Chiropractic adjustment took place in Iowa in 1895 and restored a man’s hearing. Mahatma Gandhi began receiving multiple adjustments every week for three months after experiencing problems related to high blood pressure. Gandhi’s blood pressure issues subsided as did the Spanish influenza threat to thousands of people who pursued adjustments during the epidemic of 1918 that claimed the lives of nearly five percent of the world’s population. These brief examples represent a small sampling of people who achieved health benefits through brain and autonomic changes credited to Chiropractic adjustments.

The research continues to build. Chiropractic adjustments improve brain function and benefit almost every aspect of human performance. All humans deserve access to Chiropractic care. Proper education and continually updated research will overcome the notion that Chiropractic only addresses back and neck pain. Chiropractors locate and correct small and subtle misalignments in the spine called subluxations. Subluxations always alter brain and autonomic nervous system function. Subluxations do not always cause pain despite a massive detriment to health similar to arteries that gradually clog without warning. Watermelon Health Facts and Refreshing Recipe!

It’s Watermelon season which means watermelons at your local market are juicier and less expensive than ever! Did you know that this summer favorite has many health benefits! You Can Eat the Rind: The rind contains health-promoting and blood-building chlorophyll and even contains more citrulline (amino acid) than the pink flesh! Throw it in the blender with your morning smoothie for some easy health benefits! It Lives Up to Its Name: Watermelon is more than 91 percent water. This means that eating watermelon with you on a hot summer day is a tasty way to help you stay hydrated and avoid dehydration when supplemented with plenty of water.  Try this recipe for a yummy summer Watermelon drink!


  • 8-10 strawberries
  • 1 cup watermelon, cut and cubed
  • 1/4 peeled cucumber


  1. Cut your watermelon into large cubes and remove the rind.
  2. Peel and cut your cucumber into large pieces.
  3. Put all ingredients in your blender
  4. Pour contents into a glass and refrigerate for 1 hour (it definitely tastes best when cold!)
  5. Enjoy

2015 was the hottest year on record and experts says 2016 will bring even more heat.

Now more than ever, we need to actively work on protecting ourselves and our families from the damaging effects of the seemingly unending heatwave here in California.

Before discussing solutions, let’s talk about skin cancer. Skin cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal skin cells. It occurs when un-repaired DNA damage to skin cells (most often caused by ultraviolet radiation from sunshine or tanning beds) triggers mutations or genetic defects.

Only a few blistering sunburns in childhood can double a person’s lifetime chances of developing serious forms of skin cancer.

Sunlight is our best source of Vitamin D, which is vital for metabolism regulation, boost our immune system, and growing strong bones. Over 1 billion people are deficient in this imperative vitamin, so avoiding the sun altogether is not an option.

So what changes can you and your family implement to be safe from the sun this summer?

Clothing: Sun shirts and sun hats are a great option as a first line of defense. In seconds half of the body is covered and safe from burns. They also cover the most commonly burned areas: shoulders, backs, and faces.

Planning: Have you heard of Safe Sun Hours? Safe Sun Hours (in California) are before 10am and after 3pm. During these hours you’ll find the sun isn’t beaming down on you the same way it would be at noon. During these time periods our skin is also much less susceptible to sun damage.

Choose the Right Sunscreen: Nearly every conventional sunscreen is bad for you and many “green” sunscreen brands can be worse. It’s important to keep an eye on your sunscreen’s active ingredients and familiarize yourself with dangerous chemicals with apps like Think Dirty, which allows you to scan barcodes and give any and every product a grade based on levels of toxicity.

8 Reasons Chiropractic Maintenance Care Works!

Chiropractic results are best when chiropractic is utilized consistently. Consistency is key! For this reason, many experts compare chiropractic care to brushing your teeth. The following points come from a a study (one of many) proving the efficacy and value of chiropractic wellness care!

8 Major Points of the Study:

1. In animal studies, fixation of facet joints for 4-8 weeks causes degenerative changes and osteophyte formation of the articular surfaces with facet articular surface degeneration beginning at less than 1 week.

2. Facet joint fixation resulted in synovial fibrotic adhesions that “progressed to mild adhesions in 4 weeks, moderate adhesions in 8 weeks, and severe adhesions after 12 weeks.

3. In humans, it can be hypothesized that there is a period where the adhesions are forming WITHOUT CLINICAL SYMPTOMS. This would support the common weekly or monthly spinal adjustment despite the presence of symptoms.

4. Four weeks of joint immobilization has been found to cause a time dependent loss of neurons that become progressively worse thereafter.

5. Joint immobilization has also been shown to cause muscle weakness, atrophy, and fatty infiltration and deposition into the muscle.

6. It is demonstrated that the spinal adjustment gaps the facet joints which may break up adhesions, preventing the fibrotic or degenerative process to continue.

7. There may be a possibility of reversal of the neuronal degeneration and muscular weakness through adjustments and remobilization of the joint.

8. Due to the neurological and bio-mechanical consequences of manipulative therapy, it is both logical and scientifically accurate that monthly spinal adjustive care prevents the progression of adhesion formation, joint degeneration, neuronal changes, and changes in muscular strength and recruitment.

Research shows that those who utilized chiropractic care before or after pain or symptoms were present, achieved the greatest benefit! Regular Chiropractic check ups and adjustments (when necessary) improves function, prevents future problems, and saves money by addressing the cause.
